  • Drugged Up World

All the people I know take some sort of pill for some sort of malady. Some people take a cocktail of pills regularly. I take zero pills. When I get anxiety I walk around the block. When I feel depressed, I walk around the block, or meditate.

Do you think doctors over prescribe pills to patients? And do you think there are better alternatives to pills?

We're a society of undisciplined crybabies that feels it's entitled to perpetual serenity. Drug companies have found away to profit from it. Good for them.

I wager you don't have a serious case of it. The people who so easily disparage others for seeking out treatment and help are people who don't know severe cases. You will do anything that helps. @SKANLYN - The world isn't full of undisciplined crybabies. The world is full of people extremely lacking in compassion, where the people who win the genetic lottery ( emotionally, intellectually or physically) have utter contempt and no empathy whatsoever for their fellow beings who didn't.

@stickerprice - "Me, me, me" - that's the recurring theme with people like you. "Show me compassion. Give me empathy. Pity me cuz I can't deal with the normal experiences and emotions that everyone else just accepts as part of life."

I think it just depends on the person.  Not everyone can shake it off or deal with anxiety or depression by walking or meditation.  They need the meds just so they can get out of bed.  I would say that for the average person, they should learn to cope and struggle instead using medications, but they don't have to because there are so many doctors willing to prescribe medication.

We are a drugged up society.

This was a short post, you must have attention deficit disorder.  Better get some pills for that.

Pills are great, my wife got some Vicodin for her tooth, but it doesn't hurt so it's party time for me. Nothing like good weed and a Vic.

  • ShimmerBodyCream

That is good, don't take any pills you don't have to. As for me before I was on my own personal pill cocktail I was in the ER every month when I was a teenager.

  • Mockdonimus_Tuntsweet

Nigga the only pills I fuck with are multivitamins...and only cuz I stay away from meat and dairy (i.e. cancer)

    @stickerprice - You're wrong.  They're right.  Typical enabler-speak right there.

i take generic Celexa for my anxiety and suicidal thoughts.  it works like a dream.  not everyone's emotional and mental problems can be managed on their own.  i was ready to end my life and probably would have, had i not gotten the medication i need.

  • flapper_femme_fatale

@SKANLYN - i don't think the average "normal" person contemplates killing themselves as often as i used to, or for reasons that shouldn't cause someone any emotional pain whatsoever.  you're a moron to think you can know what's going on in someone else's head.

@flapper_femme_fatale - Suicide is the ultimate act of nacissism -"I'll show the world how important I am by depriving it of me and pay no mind to those I may be hurting in doing so."

Quacks get people hooked so they can make money and get kick backs from the drug companyies.  Not all Drs are quacks.

I don't take pills either. I never though that was special because no one around me in my real  life takes pills either...then I come on xanga and everyones on something. Makes me think is it just America? or am I just in the dark as to how many people take pills in my own country?

I believe there are physicians who whip out their prescription pads a little too freely. I started taking Paroxetine a couple of years ago for OCD and anxiety. It worked wonders. I walk a couple of miles daily to attempt maintaining my weight gain (a not so fun side effect) but still feel that I need the meds, more for my OCD than the anxiety.

  • Living_just_2_breathe

I used to take medication for anxiety and I was on the highest dose and I still had anxiety on a regular basis and I think the medication made me depressed. I am now not on any medication and my counselor has been trying to get on medication to help me deal with my boyfriend's death but I refuse because I believe I can be healthy without medication.

in some cases yes. in others i look at it this way. if you get a paper cut you don't need stitches. if you have a deep wound you do. if you have a sore muscle you can bide your time and work it out. if you're getting a root canal you probably want the dentist to give you something so you won't scream and kick through the procedure. there are in many cases a severe chemical imbalance in the brain. true schizophrenics can truly benefit from drugs and when they stop taking those drugs they fall back into delusions. it's the same with depression. i used to get depressed at times but i dealt with it until it passed but that's different from clinical depression.

I would be laying in bed crying 24 hours a day if it weren't for celexa and wellbutrin. I don't want to be on meds every day of my life, but I have a chemical imbalance of Norepinephrine and serotonin. No amount of meditation or walking can physically change that. And, yes, in modern times people get more medical care than they did decades in the past. Back then they just offed themselves.
  • SuperCrazy_CStuff

When I don't take my meds...I want to kill people, you want me on my meds.

  • iheartsurrealism

Kudos to those who don't have to take anything. I know I have a chemical imbalance, and have struggled with severe social anxiety and depression since I was in middle school. I have to blog to help get the stupid shit I constantly think about out of my brain. @SKANLYN - Do you or have you ever suffered from severe anxiety or depression? Did you know it's a ridiculous endless cycle? That it takes real effort to want to take care of oneself at times, and that I hate having to take medication, but that I wouldn't be able to function like a normal person if I wasn't on it?  Here's some facts:

    Mental Disorders in America

Mental disorders are common in the United States and internationally. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans ages 18 and older — about one in four adults — suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder in a given year.1 When applied to the 2004 U.S. Census residential population estimate for ages 18 and older, this figure translates to 57.7 million people.2 Even though mental disorders are widespread in the population, the main burden of illness is concentrated in a much smaller proportion — about 6 percent, or 1 in 17 — who suffer from a serious mental illness.1 In addition, mental disorders are the leading cause of disability in the U.S. and Canada.3 Many people suffer from more than one mental disorder at a given time. Nearly half (45 percent) of those with any mental disorder meet criteria for 2 or more disorders, with severity strongly related to comorbidity.1

In the U.S., mental disorders are diagnosed based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV).4

Do some research before you make a judgement call like that.

  • Hinase

I've tried to do without drugs and tried almost everything but in the end, I needed them. My mental illness was severe enough to warrant them. I still don't like taking medicine but if it helps me function and actually gets out of bed then I'm all for them with the risks included.
